General comments
It’s hard to tell where Coova ends and little-scale begins. The combination is that perfect. Initially dark riffs accompanied by melodies that could melt your heart.
Being based in Japan myself and having heard Coova play various ‘new songs’ at her monthly event, I recognize various elements of the EP, but of course without the majesty of little-scale adding an extra layer of depth and beauty.
Track 1: Two Warriors
A very powerful start to the EP. Going from the first track alone, it is clear to see that the EP title was well chosen as we are thrown into a battleground between 8 and 16 bit synthesizers. However, rather than fighting each other, we see the two join forces and instead decide to forge the way into new, unknown areas of sonic manipulation and harmony. There is a definite exploratory element to this first track as it rolls along growing larger and larger as more and more tracks come into play.
Track 2: Time Is Running
The syncopated start and unusual percussive elements are well chosen in the first part of the track adding to the feeling of exploration. The arpeggiated melody screams up and down the scales as if looking for a lost child, really urgent and powerful.
I’m not sure if the track is supposed to be a little bugged out towards the end or not, but it finishes rather abruptly.
Track 3: Autumn
Little-scale’s almost trademark heavenly arps flutter gracefully over the thick, writhing baseline. A track full of juxtapositions for me: full of both love and hate, deep emotions and fleeting dreams. The progression is well thought out with track getting lighter and brighter towards the end, whilst always keeping the feeling of malevolence just below the surface.
Track 4: Standing Alone
The synthesized crashing waves, playful melody and sweet drums make for a refreshing and cute end to a powerful romp of an EP. The final track showing us that although at times the EP may seem like a war or battle, it is in fact only for show or like children play-fighting.
All in all, another superb release from the 8bitpeoples camp.
