Regardless of the generic “chip” label that will almost certainly be attached to any music—such as this—that chooses defunct games consoles and depleted technologies for it’s sound aesthetics, this is the most beautiful music I have heard so far this year.
Strongly reminiscent of god speed, and Icelandic bands such as Sigur Ros and mum, every song on this album was designed to pull on the heart strings. I can almost hear the ephemeral wailings of Sigur Ros front man: Jonsi Birgisson (thanks wiki), yet his presence is not necessary. The melodies, soaring leads, thunderous drums, and epic guitars are filled with more than enough emotion to make vocals redundant.
The album starts of with an upbeat, feel-good track that sounds like anamanaguchi-meets-lord of the rings. Hmmm… That description seems fitting, yet still not giving it justice.
The second track takes us on a gentile, delicate ride bobbing along at a comfortable pace, yet there is raw emotion hiding just below the surface that appears later on in the track. The thick thick 8-bit chords and manic arpeggios running playfully.
The third track starts with a run up to a cliff edge before throwing us off and casting us adrift on the clouds. That’s how I see it. Arpeggios again feature dominantly as support to the guitar and skweee-esque synth lead. We are not left in the clouds to flutter down gracefully though. Oh no. The track really lifts towards the end as we either hit a thermal and rise to a higher place, or we are joined by another entity in the air and play off into the sunset.
The fourth track features the most tempo-changes and experimentation, as if taking the best parts from the other tracks and putting them all together on a reprise. Hugely enjoyable. If not a wee bit short.
The fifth and final track of this album/EP is our exit or departure to journeys ahead. The pace slows down and the emotions run high once more. We are treated to some heavy 8-bit synth action in the middle of this track, with support from distant, zealous drumming and perfectly leveled accompanying guitars.
All in all, an excellent release and one I urge you to download! (from here: http://noisewaves.bandcamp.com/ )
